The purpose of the charity is to:
Provide annual educational grants to young people and youth organisations within the charity’s benefice.
The money is provided each year by the John Dakyn’s Almshouse Charity which uses one third of its profits to maintain the fund.
The funds are distributed annually by the Trustees.
Young people between 16 and 25 are invited to apply for grants from the charity to support their University or apprenticeship studies.
All applications are sent initially to the clerk and then considered by the Trustees at a meeting in early November.
Groups for the young people of the benefice are also invited to apply. The benefice includes the parishes of Dalton, Gayles, Kirby Hill, New Forest, Newsham ,Ravensworth and Whashton.
History :
Kirby Hill Grammar school was founded in 1556 by Reverend John Dakyn, the vicar of the parish. All boys in the parish could attend for free and boys outside the parish who had the reading, writing and maths skills could also attend. There was a dormitory upstairs for boys who needed to stay there.
The school was closed in 1957, having only had seven or eight pupils the year before and it was decided to give grants to students instead. This continues to this day.
